It is of course possible to remove the bindings from or cut the spine of books and bound volumes to allow them to pass through a standard document scanner, this can be done in a set of circumstances where keeping the books intact is not a requirement and being low cost is an issue.

Cameras positioned above the page take two images simultaneously and the scanner software joins them together at the axis of the spine having first analysed and corrected any distortions caused by the curvature of the pages.
