It is of course possible to remove the bindings from or cut the spine of books and bound volumes to allow them to pass through a standard document scanner, this can be done in a set of circumstances where keeping the books intact is not a requirement and being low cost is an issue.

For the majority of books however, they must be kept intact in order to demonstrate their authenticity, enable capture into the margins or because the book is of such value or rarity that it simply must be preserved.

PaperMountains use a number of book scanners such as the Atiz (pictured) because they enable us to digitise the pages with the book as flat as possible without undue stress being placed on the spine and bindings. Cameras positioned above the page take two images simultaneously and the scanner software joins them together at the axis of the spine having first analysed and corrected any distortions caused by the curvature of the pages.
