Book scanning services

Many organisations have and continue to use bound journals, volumes and books to keep important records together and provide a set of documents that show an uninterrupted timeline. This can prove that pages were not added or torn out.

Getting these books scanned and stored electronically will reduce costs because the content can be searched, shared and accessed without having to physically find the book and access it manually.

Scanning historically significant books enables them to be accessed and used by a wider range of researchers without them being excessively handled and possibly damaged.

Scanning books without damage

If a book can be unbound it can go through an ordinary scanner, however for those books that can't a book scanner is used which captures everything on the page and margins and corrects any curvature on the page from the binding which might otherwise distort the images.

PaperMountains' book scanning service is experienced in carefully processing books to give the best results for preservation, distribution and data extraction without over handling and damaging the binding.

Book Scanning Process

It is of course possible to remove the bindings from or cut the spine of books and bound volumes to allow them to pass through a standard document scanner, this can be done in a set of circumstances where keeping the books intact is not a requirement and being low cost is an issue.

For the majority of books however, they must be kept intact in order to demonstrate their authenticity, enable capture into the margins or because the book is of such value or rarity that it simply must be preserved.

PaperMountains use a number of book scanners such as the Atiz (pictured) because they enable us to digitise the pages with the book as flat as possible without undue stress being placed on the spine and bindings. Cameras positioned above the page take two images simultaneously and the scanner software joins them together at the axis of the spine having first analysed and corrected any distortions caused by the curvature of the pages.

Non Destructive Book Scanning Service

PaperMountains book scanners digitise the pages of the books without the need to disassemble the bindings or cut the book's spine. PaperMountains book scanning procedures ensure that even the most delicate books are scanned with care and conservation in mind giving you the best quality scans possible without damaging the original book.

Of course nothing will replace the experience of handling an old book, the feel, the smell, the feeling of holding in your hands something which is communicating across the years, however every time a book is read, it gives a little of itself to the process of being opened and used.

By scanning or digitising your precious old volumes you can make their contents available for use by researchers or staff without them having to be handled every time.

Scan Books - Share Books

Once you scan a book you can make it available online to be accessed by anyone with the correct permissions, it can be viewed by a number of people at the same time and anywhere in the world provided that they have connectivity and credentials.

This opens up the ability to share historical documents to a wider range of researchers, academics and interested visitors. In some cases organisations may be able to monetise this access to cover the cost of the scanning process.

A business will be able to make its books available across the company, enabling workers to access from home, their desk, clients site or even on the go via mobile devices.

Scanning Books For A Security Backup

Once a book is scanned the images can be handled in the same way as any other computer document which means you can back them up and implement a disaster recovery plan. This clearly won't replace a valuable old volume were it to get destroyed, however it will at least mean the words and the context in which they appeared will in some way be preserved.

For technical books, journals, laboratory books and other bound day to day business documents you can be safe in the knowledge that they are as protected as your other business documents.
